Stock Gallery News

Texture Gallery Changes

We've been sneaky so you might not have noticed, but there have been some changes to the textures gallery that should hopefully help artists find your resources much easier - not to mention clarifying where your textures can be posted :)

New Textures Gallery layout:
Some of the more defined sub categories like "paper" and "rust" have been merged back into their respective higher level categories, rust into metallic and paper into flat etc.  Previously the layout was confusing for artists with multiple potential locations for submission, hopefully this will make it an awful lot less confusing!
DeviantArt has moved all of the submissions in these categories into their new locations on the artists behalf in an automated merge process, but if you have submitted textures we recommend that you give them a once over to make sure they are in the most appropriate texture sub category

The Art Theft Discussion

**The following section contains mostly my own opinion on the subject, so feel free to take it with a large pinch of salt if you wish.

I have to say, I've not read all of the 230 odd pages of comments, but those I have read have left me feeling incredibly concerned and a little depressed.  Not just because of the stories artists are sharing of their work being taken without permission or used without credit, but because of the sheer amount of negativity and misinformation being spread.  The amount of people who have crawled out from the woodwork claiming to be copyright lawyers and more knowledgeable than the lawyers who advise DeviantArt itself leave me quite impressed. Who knew we were surrounded with such an incredible amount of legal boffins around here!

I believe it is safe to say that we have all experienced some form of theft or lack of acknowledgement for the work we produce or know somebody who has. We are surrounded by millions of artists, appreciators, collectors and admirers from dozens of countries, using dozens of languages.  It is a universal problem of the internet and affects almost every single website dedicated to the collation, representation and display of art and literature - not just DeviantArt.

What you should take away from this news article - art theft and borrowing and copying and tracing in the digital age is a nightmare of immense proportions.  I can't even begin to calculate how many users on this site alone and how many pieces of art are submitted on a daily basis.  The point I think I am trying to say is yes DeviantArt has this issue, but what makes you think that by rage quitting or raging at the staff because of 1 journal which acknowledges this problem (one of many such journals posted by staff about this over the years) is going to change anything?  It is nonsensical to me when I see so many other sites that actually don't care, who don't even offer a take down service or even provide contact information if you have a problem.

I recommend you take the time to read all the sections of the article yourself (if you haven't already) and leave your thoughts on the original journal, or you can talk to us about it, we don't mind :)  We may not have lots of letters after our names but we can help you to understand how you can use the tools at your disposal on the site for getting help or can point you in the direction of more information. I know many of you are unhappy with how things are, but I also know many of you have had your issues positively resolved.

TL;DR Don't rage quit, threaten to rage quit or rage at staff over a single journal providing generic information that is presumably designed to be accessible to artists of all languages though translation on a subject that is incredibly complex.  Its a pointless exercise. If you aren't happy on the site then leave, but don't expect the issue to be any different anywhere else.

On a very similar vein, PurpelBlur is asking for thoughtful feedback and comments surrounding the issue of crediting and using resources.
