Cyberbullying and Your DeviationsThe term "cyberbullying" was first coined and defined by Canadian educator and anti-bullying activist Bill Belsey, as "the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group that is intended to harm others."
While the actions which make up cyberbullying can vary depending on who you are talking with or what website you are on at the time, as far as we here at deviantART are concerned the act of cyberbullying involves a range of behavior from hostile and aggressive communications, to threats, sexual remarks, hate speech, ganging up on victims by making them the subject of ridicule or humiliation.
The practice of cyberbullying is also not limited to children, when perpetrated by adults toward adults these same behaviors are sometimes referred to as cyberstalking or cyberharassment but regardless of what name you attach to it, cyberbullying has grown into an increasing problem since the behavior was first ident
Site Update: Back from the Staff RetreatIn this week's Site Update, we do not have any public-facing changes. DeviantART staff just returned from the staff retreat as mentioned in last week's Site Update. This week, we are going through the hackathon projects that the Devious Technology team worked on, prioritizing them, doing further research, and then deciding how they can be used in the future.
Next week, we will back on our regular schedule and should have more updates for you!
Your Feedback

Thanks for the feedback on last week's Site Update!
We appreciate the comments we recieved about last week's Devious Technology hackathon projects! However, we'd like to reiterate that these projects were explorations, not formal undertakings. If we decide to implement any of these ideas on site, they will go through further discussion and consideration before being fully built.Feedback regarding an updated statis

:thumb309944379: Architecture Photography: Need for changes?I've been overseeing the Architecture Photography gallery for a couple of months now and often I would stumble upon deviations of abstract architectural patterns and details that I'd like to feature, but which would turn out to be submitted under Photography > Abstract & Surreal > Abstract. I never dared to move them, because they were indeed Abstract and it would be the artist's choice to submit them either in the Abstract & Surreal category or in any of the proper Architecture sections.
As these days I was doing some more research for the upcoming projecteducate week that will focus on Architecture Photography, I started to seriously question myself whether the Architecture gallery was indeed lacking a Photography > Architecture

"How do I select a new camera?"
~Tahog

"One of the most often asked questions I've seen regarding photography, above how to do something, is 'what is the best camera?', or 'what camera should I get?'.
Or something along those lines. The critical thing to note is that there is no such thing as the best camera.
Sure there are cameras that are technically better at certain things, for example, some cameras have very high resolutions, other are very good at low light photography, some are very small, and so on, but there's no su
Photography Troubleshooting: BackgroundsThis series of articles aims to answer the questions of Photographers on deviantART who have burning issues with their cameras. Have an issue? Leave a comment at the end of the article and we'll do our best to help you figure out the answer. Additionally if you have information that could help someone out - let us know!
"From when I used to do photography what I struggled with most was the backgrounds, I wanted to focus in on the objects and then I'd take it to my tutors and they'd go "it's nice but the background is your desk, or your bookshelf" Unless I'm shooting on an infinity curve I struggle to 'see' appropriate backgrounds for my set up..." FionaCreates

"Hi FionaCreates, backgrounds can either be a part of the photograph or apart from it (I'm quite pleased with what I did there :B).
Many still life images, particularly in a 'studio'

Photography Trouble Shooting: LightingRecently during a projecteducate week focusing on Still Life Photography we asked for you to share the issues that you might have when trying to obtain some great Still Life Shots. Through this series of articles we hope to answer some of the queries or give you that push you need to step outside boundaries and get creative. The first frustration came from 1510 who struggled with Lighting additionally a further 19 Deviants voted on the poll to indicate they had the same issues.

"Lighting. I always have to use just window or lamps which are never
good. kind of given up on still life photos, even I have still tons of
ideas..." 1510

"1510 lamps and natural light are a perfectly good way of lighting a subject. Many 'professional' lighting solutions, particularly the ones that burn 'hot' or constantly, are not much more than high wattage incandescent light bulbs often with some sort of cooling (to prolong the lifespan of the bulb).

"I would love to figure out how to reduce the noise on my camera.
I'd love to drop kick it off of a very high cliff, but then I wouldn't
have a camera at all. It may just be because the camera is a POS
though..."  ~CelticStrm-Stock

"Noise is a characteristic that can be mitigated with numerous techniques.
Noise is all about how much light a camera can capture above its inherent noise floor (the natural noise that the sensor and electronics will always make regardless of what you do), the more 'signal' there is above the noise floor, the less visible the noise will be.
