Stock and Resources: Policy ClarificationThe Stock and Resources community is an integral part of deviantART, both for having an active community of its own as well as providing high quality stock to all deviants.
As this community has grown so much over the years, so has the amount of invalid stock and resources that have been provided by some deviants. The Stock and Resources community feels like this reflects negatively on them, the volunteers have a hard time trying to teach people about valid stock and how to use it correctly, and it gives an appearance that deviantART Staff tolerate so-called “art theft” or copyright infringement.
In this article our aim is to reinforce our policies regarding stock and stock use and clear up some misconceptions.

Why credit and notify?Hi all,
It's your friendly neighborhood Photomanipulation and Stock & Resources CVs here, eager to tell you about a problem that has become increasingly common not only in the photomanipulation community, but also in other communities throughout dA. The problem is that people are neglecting to credit AND notify stock providers that they have used their materials.

What is the overall rule and guidance about crediting your stock?
If you want to use other people's resources (including but not limited to stock photographs, brushes, and presets), dA requires that you exactly follow the rules of usage that those individuals lay out in their license or stock rules. That invariably means that you must CREDIT them with a link to their homepage at least, and NOTIFY the providers by sending them a link to your deviation, preferrably by note. One portrait can be turned into a masterpiece and it's a shame the potential of a piece of stock can't be comprehended by many people. A good example of this type of situation is not being able to see past the decor and furnishings when you are viewing a property to buy - you have to be able to see past them to the POTENTIAL of what they could become!

What does this strange magic mean for stock and resource providers?!
Well that depends on you - the stock or resource provider. We all know that for some years now many of us have been offering "exclusive/donation/pay for" stock/resource packs that require artists to make a paypal donation/or send us DA points. The content is then emailed to them, or a link is sent to give them access to this paid for content.

So, the holiday season is upon us, and I am writing this from a computer that has been attacked by tinsel and other shiny things that keep distracting me!!

^PirateLotus-Stock and I wish our entire stock and resources community a safe, magical and warm festive season no matter when or how you celebrate! After the recent devastating news of the killings in Connecticut its a hard reminder that family and friends can be swept away from us in the blink of an eye, so cherish them and smother them in love every chance you get. We all know that there are many out there who won't be able to, and we send you our love.

The stock community has been ticking along quite nicely the last month or so which is lovely to see, we really dislike drama affecting the stock & resources galleries and try to head it off where we can! This is a reminder to everyone that we are here to help you, n

Stock and Resources UpdatesLETS TALK ABOUT STOCK "REQUESTS"
Every year we get excited, eager, passionate new stock providers entering our small but growing community, and every year these new stock models in particular get targeted by a small group of "requesters" Those of us who have been on the site for more than a few years recognise the types of "requests" I'm talking about and know to absolutely avoid them at all costs, but its something that I've seen more and more regularly over the last few months, and its definitely a concern.
There are standard "pose requests" that are NOT requested for the "artist" to work from. They are simply asking you to take photos of yourself in provocative poses so they can get off to your stock.
Firstly - please keep in mind that the images you are providing to artists are STOCK ART - they are first and foremost designed to provide artists with useable, useful references, either for traditional art, or digital art or whatever media they choose to create

PE Article: Tips and Advice 'Crediting Resources'One issue that we need to stress on deviantART is to credit your resources you use in your artwork. Crediting is a problem because a lot of people aren't doing the above.Most Stock Artists have individually tailored rules to suit their own personal level.
You must abide by these rules!
Often they include that they want full credit to be given to their use of stock. This is really simple!
All you need to do is..
Include a link/thumb of the stock used. People want to see what the stock has become!
If you don't know how to get the [link] or :thumbxxxxxx: It's simple.
Just copy and paste the URL of the Resource you used and the [link] will appear! For the thumb code, each deviation has one which is listed at the bottom right of the deviation itself or by pressing the small arrow upper right hand corner which gives you some options to share said deviation or to get the thumb code.

Will help to refute the rumours going around that staff and volunteers don't care about the "non-stock" being posted in our gallery.

I am here to tell you with absolute certainty that we DO care A LOT!!!!! Getting things like this into action to start resolving some of the far reaching issues we face as an integral part of the wider DA community takes time, but still doesn't mean your concerns are being ignored.

We will be working very VERY VERY hard to make a significant impact on the huge amount of "celeb stock" and "renders" (that aren't actually renders

) and all the other "stuff" thats being submitted to stock and resources.

Its not going to get better over night. Nothing worth doing ever takes only a few hours to do and believe me, your patience and continued support and understanding of the massive task ahead of us is appreciated!

I urge you all to refresh yourselves with the FAQ which I have listed below and to read through the journal by $dxd linked above. Right now we need to ensure that ALL members of our community, regardless of language spoken understand our policies. We all need to take part in this, to help educate our younger members so that they too can become good stock and resource providers, to continue the already excellent start the older ones amongst us have made.

I would personally like to reiterate the above journal with regards to "premade backgrounds". It is absolutely imperative that those of you who create this type of stock do so ONLY with LEGITIMATE resources. You know who you are. We aren't stupid and are quite capable of recognising images taken from google and other websites. Have some integrity and make sure you are the kind of role models to the newer members of our community who look up to you and want to follow in your footsteps that the rest of us expect you to be.
