Proposed Changes to the Stock & Resources Gallery Sub-Cats
Over the last several months we've been listening to you, and making a list of things you as stock providers submitting to the gallery, and artists searching for stock, would like to see changed or improved.
As you can imagine, this list is pretty big - given that the stock & Resources Gallery is also pretty big!
These changes and improvements include altering some of the sub category names to be more in line with the other DA galleries, moving sub-categories around to make their position in the gallery tree more logical, and disconti

You've been a photomanipulator on DeviantART for some time now, what or who first influenced you in the art world, and how has that impacted your own work?
I've always had a keen interest in art and painting since very young, and I've always had a love for fantasy and fairytale themed images when I was painting and drawing, but my love for photo manipulation and digital art in general happened about 6 years ago when I came across a Photoshop magazine by coincidence. PE - S&R Keywords and your StockKeywords... what are they... how do they work, and why are they important?
What are they...
Keywords are descriptive words added to the information on your submitted deviation.
How do they work....
Keywords are essential when any DeviantART user looks for any kind of artwork, in any gallery using the search feature. Just like when you use an internet search engine like Google to research something. Whatever you type into a search engine, is a "keyword"
Why they are important....
The fundamental purpose for sharing stock and resources on DA (or anywhere else for that matter), is to enable other artists, to FIND and USE your work.
Artists search for stock using DA's integral search engine. Which ultimately runs off "keywords" So one of the most fundamental things you can do to aid the exposure of your stock, is to apply the right keywords to it when you submit it.

Its a regular question, and something that the other Community Volunteers get asked about as well. So during Project Educate Stock & Resources week I'm going to try and lay out some of the reasons behind our choices.

There is something fundamentally different about stock & resources DD's compared to all the other DD's from all the other galleries.
Stock & Resources are NOT finished artworks to be viewed as an end product.
We can't stress this enough!!!

Stock and Resources UpdatesLETS TALK ABOUT STOCK "REQUESTS"
Every year we get excited, eager, passionate new stock providers entering our small but growing community, and every year these new stock models in particular get targeted by a small group of "requesters" Those of us who have been on the site for more than a few years recognise the types of "requests" I'm talking about and know to absolutely avoid them at all costs, but its something that I've seen more and more regularly over the last few months, and its definitely a concern.
There are standard "pose requests" that are NOT requested for the "artist" to work from. They are simply asking you to take photos of yourself in provocative poses so they can get off to your stock.
Firstly - please keep in mind that the images you are providing to artists are STOCK ART - they are first and foremost designed to provide artists with useable, useful references, either for traditional art, or digital art or whatever media they choose to create

PE Article: Tips and Advice 'Crediting Resources'One issue that we need to stress on deviantART is to credit your resources you use in your artwork. Crediting is a problem because a lot of people aren't doing the above.Most Stock Artists have individually tailored rules to suit their own personal level.
You must abide by these rules!
Often they include that they want full credit to be given to their use of stock. This is really simple!
All you need to do is..
Include a link/thumb of the stock used. People want to see what the stock has become!
If you don't know how to get the [link] or :thumbxxxxxx: It's simple.
Just copy and paste the URL of the Resource you used and the [link] will appear! For the thumb code, each deviation has one which is listed at the bottom right of the deviation itself or by pressing the small arrow upper right hand corner which gives you some options to share said deviation or to get the thumb code.

What were your first artistic influences, and did they have a hand in the development of your resources?
I joined DeviantArt many years ago and was immediately taken by the photomanipulations. So many amazing works. I started doing some myself and I realised how hard was to find a specific pose or even good objects etc. This is when I took the decision to take my own stock photography. I studied photography at university so grabbing a camera and starting to shoot was not hard, although I was seriously rusty and needed to polish my capturing skills. Thankfully I have 2 daughters that are more than happy to model

You've been a photomanipulator on DeviantART for some time now, what or who first influenced you in the art world, and how has that impacted your own work?
First influence in the art world was Geoff Taylor who originally did Raymond E Fiest's, Magician book when it went to the combined edition in the UK. Geoff Taylor has a lot to answer for. My father gave me that book when I was 8 when I was struggling to read at school. Great book to give a half dyslectic to read! Anyway I remember I was more taken with the art on the cover than the actual book. I finally completed i

My first artistic influence for stock art were the girls from ~Lisajen-stock Their account was pretty much my go-to place to look for pose reference when I first learned about stock on DeviantART because they sometimes wore outfits that showed the arms and legs really clearly. What were your first artistic influences, and did they have a hand in the development of your resources?
My dad majored in art history, and back when he was in school in the dark ages, they had hardback textbooks, so he actually kept them. I used to look at them, especially his Rembrandt book. Rembrandt is still my favorite painter. I don't think that consciously influences my stock, but maybe on a more sub-conscious level...I don't much like modern themes; I tend to want to do stuff like pirates and Renaissance costumes when I shoot model stock. Olden timey stuff.

To be honest, unlike most stock providers I am not coming from a visual art background. In fact, I'm not very good at drawing compared to others at all. However, I come from a performing background - theatre mainly, but a bit of dance too. For me, being a character is so freeing - though I go through dry spells when I'm not on stage. My friend told me one day about stock when complaining I hadn't played a character in a while and invited me to come and play with her for a day. Since then I have been hooked. I love sewing, putting together costumes and characters... it is just like performing

That's an awful lot of places you could potentially place your deviations! Due to this HUGE selection we are going to spend a little time this week trying to highlight some common "miscats" and show you examples of what and where you should be submitting your work to make the most of its exposure and usefulness!
There's no point in submitting your work if you're not going to place it where artists expect to be looking for it, which means the more you can "drill down" through the categories to place your image in the right one the more likely it is that other artists will find and use it!!

As a continuation of our Project Educate Stock & Resources week we sent her our short list of questions to answer.
What were your first artistic influences, and did they have a hand in the development of your resources?
Ah, this one i remember. In college, for my photography A-Level I was researching digital artists and came across Mika (Mary) Borsiss in a photography journal. She did wonderful fantasy manipulations, so I emailed her (not expecting a response) and a lovelier person you couldn't ask for. She explained all about how she creates her art. After that I was hooked on digital. 4 years later I went over to the resources provider dark side because of the frustration of not being able to find certain stock.

Project Educate Stock & Resources Week Intro

WELCOME TO PROJECT EDUCATE STOCK & RESOURCES WEEK!

So what is Project Educate?

Project Educate, was originally launched in 2008 by the Community Relations team, and is designed to promote and support artistic growth and knowledge throughout the community. The project includes contests, interviews, and various other events for artistic and community involvement.

The project now runs directly in line with the community through the group #projecteducate so don't forget to head over there and check out all the great articles and information being produced by and for the community!

Stock & Resources PE Week 2012

The stock and resources gallery has the unique advantage of spanning the entire DAverse, covering all the other galleries with tutorials, guides, how to's, brushes, textures, models and stock photography.

This week Dan and I are going to attempt to show you some of the unique, inspirational and wonderful creations available in our huge gallery! So hop on board and enjoy the view from the top deck!!

We have a huge selection of artist and stock provider interviews, aimed at giving you a greater insight into how and why stock and resources are created and used by different styles of artist.

We also have a series of features and articles aimed at educating (and in a lot of cases RE educating) both artists and stock providers.
