Getting sidetracked making artwork for my site... and came up with this. I'm not entirely sure if it will stand up to critique... lol I've only spent a few hours today and a few yesterday tinkering with this so please be gentle!

What I don't get is how you can make everything so perfect. I mean, really, all my work is crap compared to yours. ;P I actually get quite frustrated when I see how amazing a picture can get when it's made by you or someone of your kind, I realise how much I haven'y learned and how far the road still lays before me if you know what I mean. I'm still a new artist, still new to Photoshop (self-learned too) though, so I'll try to be patient. At the same time it is very inspiring to see how great you can get. Your pictures are very inspiring, as was your comment on Autumns Regret Revisited(?).

That said, wonderful picture! :)

Then I guess you might know how to delete a brush set? I kinda installed one twice... ;P What kind of brushes do you use for blending?

I have a soft spot for brushes too, btw. ;)

Your work isn't as bad as you think it is, your last 2 pieces are very good indeed, and theres only a few bits that I'd be tempted to suggest you tweak a little. As far as I'm concerned its all about how critical people are about their details. Lighting and perspective details not how many elements you can stick in the foreground. The aim ultimately with manips are to make them photorealistic - thats why we use photography not drawings.

Thats why so many manips fail miserably - the artist forgets the fundamentals of the media they are working with. The best advice I could ever give anybody wanting to be an excellent photomanipulator is to take very good note of the ones who got there first. They will never have odd shadows that don't mesh with the surroundings or lighting, they won't have elements that have lighting coming from six different angles, the perspective of everything will be true to real life as much as is possible on a 2D surface (gravity still affects fantasy worlds!), and the entire integration of each element is flawlessly blended and toned to achieve the look and visual impact which makes them stand out from the crowd.

All of which takes time, a good artist will know which shortcuts to take and how to improve on the process without compromising on integrity and quality, and its this that most people never really get the grasp of, hence the reason sadly the manip galleries are flooded with the mediocre to poor attempts we see so often. So what if you only produce 1 new work every few weeks, or even once per month, the most important bit is to learn as much as you can during each, so that eventually you'll be able to roll a new excellent piece out every few weeks and then eventually every few days if you so wished.

So keep experimenting and analysing what you see around you and transferring that into digital processes that are effective. Also never be afraid to ask other manippers how they achieve the effects they get :) Tutorials go a long way, but its how you interpret the ideas into your own style that counts. :)

(I'll let you into a big secret, I'm an absolute perfectionist, thats why my gallery isn't filled with fab artwork and I haven't made any new work for about a year and a bit now - this example is by no means perfect and I could rip it apart in moments. Don't be like me, don't be afraid to experiment and not get a perfect result every time!!)

(Sorry! I wrote a mini essay lol!)

I appriciate very much that you took the time to explain this much to me. :) I do have a lot of problems with the light and to blend in the objects with the surroundings, I guess the problem is that I am self-learned. I probably don't know half the tools my PS CS2 has to offer and master even less, which is quite frustrating. All I've learned so far is from tutorials on the internet. What I have learned is that the big stuff, the effects that catches your eye from the beginning, is the easy part. Anyone can do that, but when you take a closer look you see all the things that are wrong. The hard part is to make a genuine piece, a perfect piece with all the light, shadows and such. A thing that you and the other truly skilled master with perfection.

I was just gonna ask you if you could give me advice on how to improve one of the pieces you mentioned, but then I saw that you already had.

If you have time, do you have any suggestions of which tools that are best to use to get the most realistic look when it comes to blending things together?

I can't thank you enough for taking the time to writing this "essay" to me. It really helps and inspires me to improve my skills.

To be honest blending is an art in itself, and very much depends on what "look" you want eg sharp or soft etc. Experiment with different brushes and tools to get the effect you want, I'm a self taught photoshopper too and I know my labour intensive methods are far from the best :)

And no problem on the replies :)

generally the basic soft edged or hard edged, but there are a ton that create all different effects that I use later for adding texture and stuff, but I'd stay stick to the basic sets for blending unless you want a specific effect given by the brush eg stippled etc

beautiful. id like to see a closeup of just her and the leaves without the border, they're my favourite part of the picture but the border draws my eye because it's a little distracting.
...but thats not a critisism! i love it!
